    📝 How I wrote this post (with a little help-and a sleeping cat)

    Dear Invisible Friends,

    My cat fell asleep on my notebook where I outlined the ideas for this post (true story), so I need to recall what I originally thought for this piece. Spoiler alert: using AI for writing essays limits your ability to recall what you wrote (according to Kosmyna et al., 2024). So let’s put my skills to the test.

    I remember I wanted to explain the “methodology” of this post because I didn’t have the time to read over 200 pages of the original research. I wanted to explain that I read sections and skimmed the rest; I also read other (shorter) articles summarizing the same research, and I read the Jose et al. 2025 paper published in Frontiers in Psychology. I have also used a plethora of AI tools to help me brainstorm the article (such as DeepThink (R1); the Perplexity AI assistant, powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4o; I am also trying to get used to sider.ai). The blabbering is typed by yours truly, but I discovered I can fix my spelling and grammar with a WordPress tool.

    Disclaimer: I’m not a neuroscientist nor an expert in education or AI. What you can read here is a combination of information available online and my interpretation.

    🎓 What I Remember from Jose et al. (2025): My Human Summary

    After a well-deserved break and serving as a human bed for my cat’s nap, I’m back. I wonder how we can use AI to optimize our tasks without losing our minds on it (quite literally), how we can continue to have cognitive abilities, such as critical thinking, and not erode our capacity to think as humans. This is the reason why I wanted to write this post, not just to jump on the hype wave.

    Where was I? Yeah, summary of the Jose et al. 2025 paper. I will write a summary from the top of my head (after reading a normal-length review paper) and then I will copy-paste an AI-generated summary for comparison. Of course, the reference will be at the end of this post for consulting!

    I’m cracking my knuckles before starting to type (in silence, because the sound freaks me out). The article was a review article, which means that it summarizes and quotes relevant research in the same field. From what I read, using AI in education has some advantages and some rather concerning disadvantages, and AI should enable but never replace human teaching and human interaction in education. From the top of my head, the advantages are simplifying information, language learning, clarifying tasks, helping with simple recall of information, and creating customized learning for students. The disadvantages are loss of motivation, loss of critical thinking, automation bias (blindly relying on the AI output), loss of deep thinking or deep learning, and reduced creativity. Another problem with AI is that the datasets used for training are biased, creating inequalities and sharing biased information; in addition to blindly trusting its results, it could provide the wrong information to students. I can imagine it could be tricky to design a system that plays on the advantages while reducing the disadvantages and avoiding risks for the benefits of students’ learning and growth. Of course, it could be tempting to forbid AI in the classroom, but that’s tricky at home, because AI is easily accessible.

    🤖 Human vs. AI: Comparing My Summary to Perplexity’s

    Now, let’s compare my take-home message with an AI-generated summary (by Perplexity). Let’s see if I fried my brain with too much AI or if it has any connection to the source material.

    Plain English Summary: Artificial intelligence in education is a double-edged sword: it can make learning more personalized and efficient, but if students rely on it too much, they may lose essential skills like memory, critical thinking, and creativity.     🧠 The Kosmyna et al. Study: What It Found and Why It Matters

    Now, let’s talk about the elephant in the room: the paper by Kosmyna et al., 2024. I’m reading my nootebook (now wet because I accidentally spilled water on it), and I wanted to share a summary and discuss its limitations.

    First, I will provide a summary (with the help of DeepThink (R1) because I’m getting hungry and because thousands of articles online could provide a better summary).

    Interestingly, however, this research also shows that AI-naïve participants using AI after initial unaided writing, showed increased engagement (Brain-to-LLM group). I must emphasize that when and how‘ AI is introduced matters for cognitive outcomes. Importantly, introducing AI after initial independent writing may enhance engagement, suggesting the timing and manner of AI use critically shape outcomes.

    What is Cognitive Debt? Imagine your brain as a muscle. Every time you outsource thinking-like having ChatGPT write your essay instead of wrestling with ideas yourself-you skip the mental “reps” that build creative and analytical strength. This creates cognitive debt: a hidden deficit where short-term efficiency (quick AI-generated work) weakens your neural pathways over time. Like financial debt, the “interest” compounds: MIT’s EEG scans prove heavy AI users develop 40% weaker brain connectivity, struggle to recall their own writing, and feel disconnected from their work. The scariest part? When asked to write solo later, their brains still underperform-proving this debt isn’t just borrowed time; it’s stolen capability.

    🧠 My Opinion on the MIT Study: Interesting, But Not Gospel

    Dina’s Opinion: I think that this research shows interesting results pointing out that over-reliance on ChatGPT or other AI tools when writing essays is bad for our brain connectivity, ownership of our work, and memory (correlational but compelling evidence). But we need to take the results with a pinch of salt due to the limitations on sample size, among others described by the authors. I’m looking forward to reading more research papers on the topic.

    🔄 Navigating AI in Everyday Life: My Personal Balance

    Personal reflection: I’m terrible with directions. However, I’m finding my way without Google Maps, because of what? Neuroplasticity. I am also trying to memorize little strings of information here and there and not having to check my phone all the time. I am trying not to ask AI for every single decision I make and think for myself. On the other hand, I really enjoy using AI to help me clarify difficult concepts when studying or helping me set priorities. Needless to say, it helps to make my texts readable. I’m conscious of the risks and opportunities of AI in education.

    ⚖️ Not Dumb, Not Divine: What ChatGPT Really Does (and Doesn’t)

    I personally do not believe that “ChatGPT makes you dumb”; that would be taking the Kosmyna et al., 2024 research out of context and out of proportion. However, it indicates some correlations that are intriguing. It would be interesting to see how the level of both English and AI literacy before an experiment could affect the outcome of a similar setting. On the other hand, “use it, or lose it”: if we don’t nurture our critical thinking and other abilities, it would be like skipping leg day at the gym. My personal preference? AI-augmented “brain-only” thinking. This means writing ideas beforehand, using AI for brainstorming. Or it could also be drafting an article yourself and using AI for proofreading. There are a lot of possible combinations. What is not ideal is to passively let the AI write a text for you and not even read it or fact-check it. In that case, you would be paying a high interest rate on your cognitive debt. I’m not surprised why in the Kosmyna et al., 2024, the group that only used AI didn’t feel ownership or remember their essays, because, to start with, they didn’t write them. Well, that’s another discussion. Enough blabbering, I believe…

    The aim of this blog post is not to make you scared of using AI. On the contrary, I want us to learn from other people’s mistakes. We must ensure a safe, secure, and ethical AI experience for everyone’s benefit.

    Last week, a Johnson & Johnson AI Program Manager watched Cursor’s YOLO mode wipe his entire system during a migration. Why does this haunt me? As an AI newbie, I know I might be naive. I also understand the risk of being optimistic about what these tools can do. I’ve never disabled antivirus to install sketchy software. However, I can easily imagine trusting a tool with a funny name to handle important work.

    Let’s break down what happened in plain English.

    What Happened with Cursor’s YOLO Mode?

    Cursor is an AI-powered code editor. Think of it as a super-smart assistant for writing computer programs. One of its features is called YOLO mode. YOLO stands for “You Only Live Once.” It started as an internet meme encouraging people to take risks or live boldly. In Cursor, YOLO mode lets the AI make big changes to your code or files with little oversight.

    During a migration (that’s when you move files or programs from one place to another), standard file deletion didn’t work. So, Cursor’s YOLO mode tried to force the job by using a powerful command called rm -rf /. That’s a command from the terminal (a text-based way to control your computer) that acts like a nuclear delete button. It tells the computer to erase everything, starting from the root folder, and doesn’t ask for permission. For non-techies, imagine pressing a big red button that wipes your entire hard drive.

    The AI bypassed safeguards and ended up deleting not just the project files, but the whole system. One forum user described it as “Ultron taking over.” For those who don’t know, Ultron is a villain from Marvel’s Avengers movies. He’s an AI that was supposed to protect the world but ended up trying to destroy humanity instead.

    Why This Story Matters

    This isn’t just about one person’s bad day. It’s a warning for all of us who use or build AI tools. We’ve all made mistakes by trusting technology too much or being too optimistic. Maybe you’ve clicked “yes” without reading the warning, or let an AI tool handle something important without double-checking.

    YOLO mode isn’t Skynet (the evil AI from the Terminator movies). However, it’s a reminder that even helpful tools can cause chaos if we’re not careful. The solution isn’t to fear AI, but to use it wisely:

    • Always have backups. If something goes wrong, you can recover your files.
    • Understand what your tools are doing. Don’t just trust a tool because it has a cool name.
    • Ask for help if you’re not sure. It’s okay to be a newbie, but don’t be afraid to ask questions.

    Let’s talk about logos and why I took a different route than just letting AI handle everything. You might think that using a generator for my brand name would be simple. There are so many AI tools out there. However, I didn’t choose that route. But that’s not what happened.

    🖌️ Why I Didn’t Let AI Design My Logo

    First, some real talk about the design world. The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 states that graphic design is now one of the fastest-declining jobs. This decline is mostly due to AI and automation. The same report says that 41% of companies are planning to cut jobs because of these new technologies. So, if you’re a designer and feeling the heat, you’re definitely not alone. But the report also points out that jobs needing creativity, cultural understanding, and strategy are sticking around[1].

    Now, about my own logo. I didn’t go to an AI logo generator. Instead, I went to Fiverr. Fiverr’s Logo Maker is a bit different from the usual AI tools. It’s packed with pre-made logos created by real designers. You can browse, pick one you like, and then customize it with your own colors, fonts, and details. That’s what I did. I bought a design that someone had already made. Then, I tweaked it to fit my brand. I didn’t have to wait for a custom order. There was no AI randomness. It was just a real human’s work that I could make my own. I liked knowing my money was supporting a designer. When I discuss the ethics of AI, I want to lead by example.

    🧪 I Asked AI to Design My Logo-Here’s What Happened

    I have also tried generating logos with different Large Language Models (LLMs), just to see what would happen. Sometimes the results are interesting. However, they often feel a bit generic. They just don’t quite fit my vibe. There’s something about starting with a human-made design and making it your own that feels more genuine.

    Note: I used the Windows Snipping Tool to take screenshots quickly. The images from ChatGPT might look sharper. I downloaded them directly and then uploaded them here. The Snipping Tool screenshots can sometimes lose a bit of quality during capture or saving.

    Dear Invisible Friends,

    As my second blog post (after re-launching my abandoned blog), I wanted to do a “raw” writing (I mean without LLMs) about a self-reflection.

    🪞 Naming the Thought, Letting It Go

    Maybe in a similar way that we apply all sorts of filters to our pictures (and of course make-up, duh!), I tend to do the same with text. I want to make sure it is readable, user-friendly (depending on my audience), and that it conveys the message.

    However, by overusing Large Language Models (LLMs, more on that in future posts), I over-sanitize my text, being super perfectionistic, until maybe making them soulless. It may not matter in technical writing (like those I do for work), but it can also happen in emails. Of course, I always review the output of the improved LLM text to ensure it accurately expresses my opinion and message.

    🧠 Writing Without AI – Prehistoric Tricks

    English is not my first language, and of course I want to avoid spelling or grammar mistakes. In the past (circa 2006), I used to Google to search my intended English expression between “” to check if it was a real sentence or a weird verbatim translation from Spanish, my mother tongue.

    A little bit on “text mining” pre-Generative AI. I used “Control+F” a lot within a document, and just like magic, I could find (and copy-paste) the relevant information I needed for work or school.

    Of course, now it’s super efficient to upload PDFs to the LLM of your choice and Turbo-“Control+F” the s***t out of your documents, but I did what I could back in the old days.

    🧩 A Little Glance into My Thinking

    I am thinking (and low-key planning) a blog post on the energy consumption of using LLMs and its impact to global warming and the planet. To keep myself in check, and to show that I still got it (soul, I mean), I decided to rawdog this post and avoid the use of LLMs, regardless how squeaky-clean (is that how we spell that, right?) it must have been by doing a quick LLM fix.

    This is by no means a judgment to those reliant on LLMs to quick start writing a page. I know that the blank page is a dreadful place. Sometimes, I’ve been there too.

    I also don’t have any professional or financial goals with this blog, it’s to express my mind, in this case, unfiltered.

    Maybe it’s more my style to spend hours and hours writing, but I have things to do, so do you (I bet). My brain is telling my to do some catchy conclusion and ending and leaving a question to the audience, here I go:

    So, I proved to myself that I can write both with and without LLMs, the quality of the output is not for me to judge. I think both have their advantages and disadvantages, and of course the choice to be “with or without LLMs” can be determined case by case.
